Construction and Development

The original site was operated by the Melville family as a rose nursery for many years, in 1997 they built the tea room and named it the Rose Heritage Cafe. Whilst the nursery was always a popular attraction the tea room gained its own popularity for serving exceptional coffee and beautiful cakes in a beautiful surrounding. 

The site was purchased by the CAM Management Group in October 2014 with a view to redevelop the site into a dedicated wedding and function venue. The old tea rooms which were looking tired and unsustainable were changed into a modern, classy family styled restaurant.

After an extensive review of the site it was decided that most of the old gardens and existing structures were no longer up to code and were in fact dangerous. There was also the issue of accessibility for persons with disabilities and mobility issues therefore a conscious decision was made to rebuild almost everything.

In order to rebuild we had to demolish. This decision was controversial as the site was rustic and therefore well liked by the local community and from visitors from 'Down the Hill' as they wanted the rustic charm and the country feeling to be maintained.

The building company chosen for this task was a local company called Tieleman Building Company operated by Rob and Tosh Tieleman. Rob was also commissioned to be the main Project Manager for the redevelopment of the whole site. One of the primary reasons for choosing Tieleman construction was that they are a local company who specialise in constructing prestige houses in the hills and as locals who were born and grew up in the area they were sympathetic to local opinions etc.

The brief given to Rob was simple, we wanted to redevelop the site so it was commercially viable, we wanted every part of the site to be accessible via a wheelchair or mobility aid, we wanted a three year plan to reinstate the gardens and make them sustainable into the future. We are now into our third year of that plan and we are on track. Currently we have over 8000 visitors to the venue per month who enjoy all the new amenities as well as the ease of access and parking.
